“We are excited to have someone as experienced and influential in the cruise industry as Joyce Landry on our growing team,” states Susan Gibbs, Executive Director of the SS United States Conservancy. “Joyce has been at the forefront of using ships for a variety of purposes. Her guidance will be invaluable as we look to transform the SS United States into a stationary destination where this iconic vessel and American history can be celebrated by a whole new generation.”

“This is a wonderful opportunity to get involved in helping save a precious piece of American history and one of the greatest ships ever built,” states Landry who owns a historic home and completed the process of placing it on the National Historic Register. “I look forward to working with Susan and the Conservancy team to leverage my contacts and expertise to help ensure that the SS United States once again serves as a shining symbol of American pride.”

Landry and her business partner, Josephine (Jo) Kling, were the first to specialize in corporate events at sea, also pioneering the use of cruise ships as floating hotels. She has been at the forefront of many projects involving cruise ships as dockside charters including the 2005 Super Bowl in Jacksonville Florida, the 2007 Cricket World Cup in the West Indies, the 2009 Summit of the Americas in Trinidad. Landry & Kling was recently appointed as exclusive broker by Rio Olympics 2016 to charter ships from US based cruise lines to serve as supplemental housing during the games.

In 2009, the Cruise Lines International Association honored both Landry & Kling when they became the only non cruise line executives inducted into the CLIA Hall of Fame. The honor recognized their three decades of achievements and innovations, including advancing cruise ships as viable meeting venues.

In light of the buzz surrounding the 100th anniversary of the RMS Titanic's tragic loss, USA Today published an op-ed reflection on the SS United States, her innovations inspired by lessons learned from the Titanic, and her own unique legacy, written by Conservancy's executive director, Susan GIbbs.

As we approach the Titanic's 100th anniversary on Sunday, the doomed luxury liner seems to be sailing across every television and computer screen. Amidst the rapt attention paid to a British ship's tragic end, the most famous ocean liner that never sank still bears the proud name United States. Though sadly overlooked by most Americans, our nation's flagship still serves as an enduring symbol of American postwar power, pride and innovation.

RFQ is First in Two-Step Process to Find Developers to Repurpose America’s Flagship

NEW YORK, NY…April 5, 2012 – With all the buzz surrounding the 100th anniversary of the Titanic’s sinking, it’s full steam ahead to give the greatest American ocean liner a new lease on life as a 21st Century waterfront destination. The SS United States Redevelopment Project (SSUSRP) is proud to announce the release of a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) as part of an aggressive process to identify a developer to repurpose America’s flagship and one of the most historic vessels afloat.

The SS United States, which will celebrate the 60th anniversary of its maiden voyage this year, remains the largest passenger vessel ever constructed in the United States. At nearly 1,000 feet long, she remains the fastest ocean liner to cross the North Atlantic and one of the last surviving of the great 20th Century liners.

The RFQ seeks to identify a developer to refurbish, transform and re-purpose the historic ship into a for-profit, self-sustaining, multi-purpose stationary waterfront attraction. “This is an invitation for private developers to get engaged in perhaps the most unique and exciting development project in the nation,” states Dan McSweeney, Managing Director of the SSUSRP. “As our nation’s flagship and a symbol of American innovation and engineering, this iconic vessel presents enormous opportunities to attract a whole new generation of users and visitors.”

The SS United States’ home port of New York as well as Miami have been identified as promising locations for the long-term docking of the ship, though other cities will be considered.

The SS United States project concept is currently for a mixed-use development that may include a variety of feasible uses for the ship’s more than 650,000 square feet of enclosed space including but not limited to hotel, restaurants, event space, retail, and educational facilities. Plans also include a museum and the restoration of the ship’s most iconic historic features.

Those interested in participating in the process will have 30 days to respond to the RFQ. After RFQ responses are reviewed, a limited number of Prequalified Proposers will then be invited to respond to a more detailed Request for Proposals (“RFP”). Finalists will then be selected to negotiate terms of an agreement for redevelopment of the ship at the selected location. A developer will be selected by the end of 2012, with the intent of siting the vessel in the selected city by summer 2013.

The SSUSRP is a strategic initiative of the SS United States Conservancy, the national nonprofit organization that purchased the historic vessel last year. The Conservancy is also advancing plans for public use, including a world-class museum and educational programs aboard the ship. "The SS United States is the most famous ocean liner that never sank, and a symbol of American pride, power and purpose,” said Susan L Gibbs, the Conservancy's executive director. “There’s only one SS United States. The RFQ and RFP process will help ensure that this great vessel continues to give future generations a glimpse into our past while serving our nation again as a new, modern and sustainable facility for millions to enjoy.”

The release of the RFQ comes on the heels of the SSUSRP’s announcement last week naming New Canaan Advisors LLC as real estate advisors to a growing team leading this exciting redevelopment program.

TITANIC VS. SS UNITED STATES: TRAGEDY AND ACHIEVEMENT

New Web Feature Compares Titanic to America's Greatest Ocean Liner

NEW YORK, NY, April 12, 2012-- As part of its year-long effort to mark the 60th anniversary SS United States’ historic maiden voyage and raise awareness about the greatest American liner ever built, the SS United States Conservancy (Conservancy) has launched a new web feature comparing the TITANIC and SS UNITED STATES. Visitors to the site can see the two ships through a side by side comparison of their dimensions, speed, weight, and safety features.

100 years ago this week, the RMS Titanic left Southampton, England and sailed into history. Today, the vessel is synonymous with mystery, human tragedy, and engineering failures. In contrast, the SS United States, America's flagship from the era of the great trans-Atlantic liners, is still afloat today and symbolizes speed, power and a bygone era of sea travel in grand style.

The new section of the Conservancy's site is a simple way to educate history buffs, Titanic enthusiasts and a whole new generation about the American liner that was larger and faster than Titanic and still holds the trans-Atlantic speed record. In fact, the United States was not only the safest ship ever built, she could travel faster in reverse than the Titanic could go forward.

“The SS United States is the greatest ship that never sank. In her day, the ship was a symbol of American might as well as post-war pride and technological innovation,” states Susan Gibbs, Executive Director of the Conservancy and granddaughter of the SS United States’ designer, William Francis Gibbs. “It is our hope that the fanfare surrounding Titanic will make more people appreciate this proud American icon. The Titanic is resting at the bottom of the ocean, but we still have a chance to save the SS United States.”

The Conservancy, which purchased the 990-foot-long ship last year, is currently raising funds to care for the historic vessel, begin the restoration process and develop portions of her more than 650,000 square feet of interior space into a museum. The group is also engaged in a process to contract with a developer to turn the United States into a stationary, mixed-use destination in a major American port. The United States is currently laid up in Philadelphia.

SS UNITED STATES REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT NAMES NEW CANAAN ADVISORS, REAL ESTATE SOLUTIONS GROUP TO GROWING TEAM TO REPURPOSE HISTORIC AMERICAN OCEAN LINER

Veterans of Grand Central Terminal and World Trade Center Join Redevelopment Effort

PHILADELPHIA, PA…March 26, 2012 – As momentum continues to build for the effort to save and repurpose the greatest American ocean liner ever built, the SS United States Redevelopment Project (SSUSRP) today announced that it has named New Canaan Advisors LLC (NCA) as real estate advisors to a growing team leading this exciting redevelopment program. New Canaan Advisors will assist the SSUSRP on a number of aspects related to transforming the historic ship into a stationary, multi-purpose waterfront destination.

“We believe that New Canaan Advisors is the right firm to help us translate our vision for the future of the SS United States into a reality,” said Dan McSweeney, Managing Director of the SS United States Redevelopment Project. “They have the unique experience of handling both high-profile projects and historic properties, making them a great asset for our team.”

The overall concept is currently to invite a mixed-use commercial and public development with a range of proposed revenue-generating uses including, but not limited to, event space, restaurants, retail, and hotel.

The SSUSRP is a strategic initiative of the SS United States Conservancy, the national nonprofit organization that purchased the historic vessel last year. The Conservancy is also advancing plans for public use, including a museum and educational programs aboard the ship, which offers more than 650,000 square feet of usable space. "We are fully committed to restoring and redeveloping this great symbol of American pride and innovation. Like the Statue of Liberty, there is only one SS United States, and we are determined to save the ship for future generations," said Susan L Gibbs, the Conservancy's executive director and granddaughter of SS United States designer, William Francis Gibbs.

“We are excited about this unique opportunity to assure the preservation of America’s flagship, and help her usher in a new era of service to the public while generating revenue to support its ongoing use,” states NCA’s founder and Chief Advisor, Curtis C. Battles. “The role that NCA will play in the redevelopment of the SS United States is a great example of the way we seek to add value for all our clients. We are proud to be a part of this significant project.”

Prior to founding NCA, Battles worked on the redevelopment of two of New York City’s most visible commercial real estate icons – Grand Central Terminal and the World Trade Center.

NCA provides public and private organizations with unique resources for transforming underutilized assets and facilities into new opportunities. The firm specializes in helping public/private partnerships develop properties and assets into vibrant, exciting and financially feasible uses.

The growing SS United States redevelopment team will also include NCA strategic partner Charles Shorter as Senior Advisor. Shorter brings to the team more than 30 years of real estate experience in creating strategic approaches to large scale mixed-used projects including market and financial feasibility and structuring public/private development partnerships. Real Estate Solutions Group (RESGroup), LLC Founder Patricia Adell will also assist NCA on the SS United States project. RES Group, provides comprehensive real estate consulting services to all levels of government, universities, school districts, and private developers to structure public/private finance and development solutions to maximize value.

In July 2010, the SS United States Conservancy received a $5.8 million philanthropic pledge allowing for the ship’s outright purchase and ongoing funding for maintenance at her berth in Philadelphia, PA. The current concept is for the redeveloped multi-purpose ship to be located in a major East Coast metropolitan location.

In early 2011, Marsh’s class, including Clayton Shaw, Matthew Ruiz, Anthony Alulema, Matt Massarelli, Kevin Cordova and Kunal Chawla spent over three months recreating the Conservancy’s call to arms, originally drawn by Cadet Stephanie Biddle of SUNY Maritime College, in brilliantly carved and decorated wood.

Stephen Marsh had brought a copy of the poster into his classroom, and, his students, upon hearing the history of the ship, were immediately inspired. They spoke of the elegance of the SS United States, and the engineering marvel that she represented. The ship was an emblem of pride in workmanship, and Marsh’s students did her proud. Over the course of the class, they traced the poster and etched it into wood, drilling out holes for pinpoint lights to illuminate the carving. The funnels even smoke!

The final product was breathtaking, and a real wonder.

On February 3rd of this year, Stephen Marsh and his students presented the carving to the SS United States Conservancy in a ceremony at Union High School. Steven Ujifusa, the Conservancy’s Development Associate, and Susan Caccavale, a member of the Board of Directors, accepted the gift. Ujifusa and Caccavale gave a joint presentation on the history and meaning of the SS United States to over 100 students. Ujifusa talked about the SS United States as representing an era when America built great things, as well as the story of a young man who followed his dreams. Caccavale talked about her mother Elaine Kaplan, a pioneering female engineer who designed the ship’s propellers and was the only female engineer on the Gibbs & Cox SS United States design team.

News12 New Jersey and TV34 of Union, New Jersey covered the event.

The Conservancy is incredibly grateful for this gift – humbled by the hard work and dedication, and inspired by the pride in their work that Stephen Marsh and his students have displayed.

Today, February 1, 2012, marks the one-year anniversary of the SS United States Conservancy's ownership of the greatest ship ever built, the SS United States. Our purchase of the ship, made possible by a generous $5.8M grant from H.F. "Gerry" Lenfest, marks the first time in history that an organization concerned primarily with historic preservation has owned a passenger vessel of this size.

The Conservancy has laid an extensive amount of groundwork in 2011 for the ship's redevelopment, but the ship is not saved. While we have made significant developmental progress in the past year, the fact remains that if a viable real estate deal and our organizational fundraising goals are not reached by the end of 2012, the ship will be sold and broken up for scrap.

That means we need your help. Please become a paying member of the SS United States Conservancy today.

The SS United States Conservancy has begun the process of cultivating many new donors — individuals, foundations, and corporate donors. The Conservancy has identified over 140 foundations for priority outreach, as well as begun development of a new "Corporate Flagship Council" for corporate sponsorships. In addition, the SS United States Redevelopment Project has identified several potential partners in both New York and Miami and is continuing to hone in on the best possible opportunity for the ship's redevelopment as a financially sustainable waterfront attraction.

Gearing up for the ship's 60th Anniversary in our "make-or-break" year, the Conservancy has many exciting plans for the upcoming year to bolster awareness for the ship, for our mission, and to help us attain our ultimate goal of restoration. Among these plans are:

Unveiling a brand-new documentary highlighting the ship's history and the Conservancy's mission, SS United States: Made in America

Releasing a made-for-television Public Service Announcement, featuring Super Bowl-winning head coach Dick Vermeil

Unveiling a new museum installation at the Forbes Gallery in New York City in May, 2012 as a preview for our larger shipboard museum planning efforts

Hosting several new member cultivation events, including a gala in New York City in celebration of the 60th Anniversary of the ship's maiden voyage

Launching an interactive, online, grassroots fundraising campaign — "Paint the Big Ship"

Holding a ceremonial lighting and painting of the ship's funnels

All of these plans coincide with the Conservancy's main effort to raise funds for the vessel's historic redevelopment, and support the mission of the SS United States Redevelopment Project to ensure the ship's sustainable future. The Conservancy needs your help to continue to develop these plans and make sure that 2012 will see a successful redevelopment of the SS United States. We have a great opportunity before us, but a failure to realize it by the end of this year means that opportunity will be lost forever. Please become a member of the SS United States Conservancy today. Your contribution will help preserve America's flagship for future generations.

Together, we can change history. Together, we WILL save the SS United States!

Conservancy Executive Director Susan Gibbs will present a "sneak preview" of the dazzling new film, SS United States: Made In America at the Mariners Museum of Newport News, VA, on Thursday, February 9. We hope that many Conservancy members and supporters from the Hampton Roads area, the birthplace of the SS United States, will attend this special event.

The film, a successor the award-winning film SS United States: Lady in Waiting produced by Bob Radler and Conservancy board member Mark Perry, includes extensive new footage and tells the riveting story of the SS United States past and present. After the film screening, Susan will deliver a short presentation on the SS United States Conservancy's ongoing to quest to preserve the record-breaking liner as well as share a few stories about her grandfather William Francis Gibbs, the ship's designer.

As a special treat to accompany the program, the Mariners' Museum Collections Department will be exhibiting original table, chairs, and place settings from the SS United States. A light reception will follow the screening and presentation. The event is free of charge. We look forward to seeing many of you there!

A new exhibition presents a haunting juxtaposition of the Big U’s glamorous past and her faded present. Memorabilia and prints of Kodachrome photographs, commemorating the ship’s heyday, are set in sharp contrast to five large-scale photographs of the SS United States as she is today.

Richard Williams, Professor of Contemporary Visual Cultures and Dean of Postgraduate Studies at the University of Edinburgh, is the architect of this exhibit. Although documenting the present of the SS United States fits well with his academic interest in contemporary urbanism, Williams has a deeper and more personal claim to the ship.

Born in the United States, Williams’ parents brought him back to the United Kingdom aboard the SS United States. “It's my creation myth!” Williams says of that trip, and it sparked a lifelong love for and fascination with the ship. In 2010, he had the opportunity to revisit the SS United States. Coming face to face with the icon of his youth, he says, “was an extremely strange experience - seeing something so familiar in image, but for the first time in real life.”

Williams had brought his camera, and the weather, fortunately, obliged. His photographs thoughtfully documented a weary and forlorn SS United States, and formed the backbone of the exhibition. But perhaps more poignant, by contrast, are the prints of old Kodachromes – documenting Williams’ and his parents’ transatlantic trip in 1967.

To our constituency across the Atlantic: Richard Williams’ exhibit at the Stills Gallery will be up through March 18th, 2012. More information can be found here.

For those of us on this side of the Atlantic: Richard Williams has written an article for the UK's Blueprint Magazine, summarizing his experience with the SS United States and featuring some of his photography, which may be found here.

The SS United States Conservancy will soon launch its annual fundraising appeal. We have the funding in hand to take care of the SS United States for only one more year. Your continued support will give our national flagship a chance at a future. No amount is too big or too small.

Conservancy donors are inspired by the SS United States for many reasons. In explaining her recent $10,000 gift, Marie Prewett writes, "Especially in times like these, we must save a symbol of America's perseverance and resilience... For future generations, she represents the ability that we once had, then let drift away, but can — and will — reclaim."

As always, to make a tax-deductible donation in support of the Conservancy's predevelopment and historic preservation efforts, please click here.

One major focus of the Conservancy's fundraising efforts is our future shipboard museum. I recently delivered a presentation to the International Congress of Maritime Museums, a gathering of museum executives from 22 countries. Panels examined evolving museum visitor expectations, new revenue models, and trends in innovative interactive exhibits. The Conservancy recently launched its own curatorial planning process: What stories should our museum tell? What can the SS United States teach us about the American dream? Our Cold War history? Advances in steam propulsion? The immigrant experience? The "Mad Men" era? We look forward to receiving your thoughts and suggestions as we continue to refine our curatorial plans.

We always love hearing from Conservancy supporters. Eight-year-old Elliot Lehmann recently wrote to tell us to tell us not to scrap the SS United States. He asked us to "look out for the ship carefully. There are no more German U-boats or sea mines. There may be icebergs. If there are, just be careful. And turn in time."

Elliot Lehmann: We vow to turn the ship in time. And we promise to work our hearts out to save the SS United States for your generation and those that follow behind.

	Executive Director
We pleased to announce that Dr. Marie Prewett has made an extremely generous gift of $10,000 to the Conservancy. A research scientist in New York City, Prewett has also created a moving video advocating for the preservation of the SS United States.

Dr. Prewett hopes that her generous gift to our organization will inspire others to contribute to the preservation of this irreplaceable national treasure for future generations:

For me the SS United States represents much more than just an engineering marvel. She represents a time when America could always improve upon existing technology and make it better, faster, and more efficient. We had the talent to take the design successes and failures of the past, learn from them, and distill that knowledge into something new and special. "Made in America" meant solid engineering and durable quality. For future generations she represents ability that we once had, let drift away, but can and will reclaim. After long consideration I've decided to help toward the preservation of the SS United States because, especially in times like these, we need to save a symbol of America's perseverance and resilience.

Congratulations to our newest Blue Riband Council member! Together, we can indeed change history.

Streater has very graciously offered to donate 10 percent of the book's sale proceeds to the SS United States Conservancy. The Conservancy is delighted to spread the word on this comprehensive work on our great ship. Streater was meticulous in his research for the book and has assembled an extraordinary collection of vintage photographs to accompany his riveting narrative.

The Conservancy was fortunate enough to be introduced to Les Streater by Carl Weber, administrator of the SS United States Yahoo Group, a long-time friend of the organization. We are grateful to both Carl and Les for their ongoing support.

I recently discussed latest developments at the World Ship Society Port of New York Branch meeting. The upshot is that we are gaining momentum, attracting influential supporters, and looking into more detailed possibilities for the ship. New York remains our primary proposed site for redevelopment.

In the next several weeks, we'll be making several significant announcements about the way ahead. I think you'll find the news both positive and realistic.

As always, thank you for your interest and support. If you have any questions about the business/investment side of "Saving Our Ship," please don't hesitate to contact me.

	Best regards,
