Imagine if Gerry Lenfest had intervened at the last minute to give New York's Pennsylvania Station a 20-month stay of execution back in the early 1960's. Think of what a revitalized Penn Station might look like today — a beautiful, bustling historic beacon, providing entertainment, jobs, and inspiration for thousands of people.

This is what the future could be for the SS United States. On February 1, 2011, the SS United States Conservancy took formal ownership of the greatest ocean liner ever built. Without Lenfest's $5.8M gift, the ship would have been sold for scrap. But the ship is not saved. The Conservancy's purchase of the SS United States amounts to a stay of execution. If we are unable to come up with organizational funding and a viable real estate deal by the end of the year, the SS United States will go the way of Penn Station — destroyed forever.
