Blue Riband Council
The SS United States Conservancy is developing a "Blue Riband Council" of major donors. As Honorary Chairman of this group of important supporters, Gerry Lenfest has set the bar high and has challenged all of us to think about how we may engage in the effort to save and successfully redevelop the SS United States. In 2011, the Conservancy will announce the charter members of this prestigious body, highlighting each person's background, vision, and contributions to the redevelopment of "America's National Flagship."
A note from Gerry Lenfest follows.
Dear Friend of the SS United States:
On July 1, 2010, I made a commitment to support the SS United States at the Conservancy's National Flagship Celebration. On that evening in Philadelphia, hundreds of Americans from all walks of life came together to honor this great ocean liner's legacy and pledge ongoing support in the effort to "save our ship." Just before her fading stacks were illuminated, I told those gathered that this ship is worth keeping and worth saving; she is still the most majestic ship afloat.
I also made it clear that the Conservancy has a big job ahead. My $5.8 million pledge only grants the ship a short window of time; enough to purchase and maintain her for 20 months while the Conservancy establishes the partnerships and financing necessary to redevelop her as a multi-purpose stationary attraction. Should this happen, the Conservancy would not only serve as steward of the ship's historical legacy, but also oversee a museum and educational program on board.
I believe the Conservancy is more than up to the challenge, but this is still an urgent matter. The Conservancy needs your help to make this dream a reality, as the costs associated with title transfer and preparing the ship for a refit are significant.
Please join me in this important national effort. Consider joining me as a member of the Conservancy's Blue Riband Council by making a sizable, tax-deductible gift. Doing so is a historic way to make a positive impact on future generations of visitors to this great ship.
As I said last summer, let's do it!
Sincerely,
Gerry Lenfest
